The House passed legislation, the Taxpayer Data Protection Act (H.R. 8292) that would increase penalties for the unauthorized disclosures of taxpayer data from government employees and contractors.
The bill, authored by Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith, R-Mo., passed by a voice vote, and has enjoyed broad bipartisan support.
The bill would increase the maximum possible sentence for such disclosures from five years to 10 years, and treat each instance as a separate violation. The maximum possible fine for each leak would also be increased to $250,000.
